​As summer activities move indoors during the heat of the day, we often increase the electrical load on our homes with air conditioners, fans, and various appliances. The New Holland Fire Department wants to remind residents that electrical issues remain a leading cause of residential fires, and many of these incidents are entirely preventable.

​Here are essential tips to ensure your home's electrical system stays safe and efficient:

​1. Avoid Overloading Outlets

​It is common to rely on power strips and extension cords, but they should never be used as a permanent solution for a shortage of outlets.

  • ​One Appliance per Outlet: High-wattage appliances, such as space heaters, air conditioners, and refrigerators, should always be plugged directly into wall receptacles.
  • ​Avoid "Daisy-Chaining": Never plug one power strip or extension cord into another, as this significantly increases the risk of overheating and fire.

​2. Inspect Cords Regularly

​Over time, cords can become damaged from furniture, pets, or simple wear and tear.

  • ​Look for Fraying: If you notice any frayed, cracked, or loose wires on an appliance cord, stop using the item immediately and repair or replace it.
  • ​Don't Hide Under Rugs: Never run extension cords under rugs or carpets; this traps heat and prevents you from spotting signs of damage.

​3. Listen to Your Electrical System

​Your home often gives you warning signs before an electrical fire occurs.

  • ​Warm Outlets: If a wall outlet or switch feels warm to the touch, it could indicate faulty wiring or an overloaded circuit; contact a licensed electrician right away.
  • ​Frequent Tripping: If your circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows repeatedly, it is a sign that the circuit is overloaded or malfunctioning.

    • ​A Quick Reminder for Our Neighbors:

    While you're performing your electrical safety checks, don't forget to verify your smoke alarm status. If your home's smoke detectors are over 10 years old or you need assistance installing them, our volunteer firefighters are here to help.

    ​Through our "Be Alarmed!" program, we provide and install free 10-year sealed battery smoke detectors for residents in our fire protection district.
