☀️ Beat the Mid-Summer Heat Safely, New Holland! ☀️
With July in full swing and temperatures climbing across Logan County, the New Holland Fire Department wants to remind everyone how to stay safe during the hottest months of the year. Between backyard relaxation, summer chores, and farm operations, unique heat hazards can sneak up on us quickly.
Here are a few quick tips to keep your home, property, and family safe this summer:
🌾 1. Agricultural & Machinery Fire Safety
With peak summer farm activities underway on our rural routes, machinery fires are a serious seasonal risk. High operational heat combined with dry field dust can quickly cause a spark.
- Clear the Chaff: Regularly blow out dust, chaff, and dry debris from engine compartments and around electrical components.
- Check the Bearings: Overheating bearings are a primary source of equipment ignition. Keep them well-greased and monitor machinery gauges carefully.
🔌 2. Smart Home Cooling
Staying cool is a priority right now, but running extra fans and air conditioners strains your home's electrical system.
- No Extension Cords for ACs: High-draw appliances like window air conditioners should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Extension cords can easily overheat and start an electrical fire.
- Keep Vents Clear: Make sure portable units and fans have plenty of breathing room and aren't pushed right against curtains, blankets, or furniture.
🍉 3. Mind the Grill Coals
Whether you are throwing burgers on a charcoal grill or smoking meat for a backyard get-together, fire disposal matters just as much as cooking safety.
- Douse the Ashes: Never throw charcoal ashes or spent wood chunks straight into a trash can or plastic bin.
- Soak Them Down: Let coals cool completely for at least 24 hours, or thoroughly douse them with water and stir them before disposal to guarantee there are no hidden hot spots.
