Spring into safety
Spring Into Safety: Protecting Your Home This Season
As the grass turns green and the flowers begin to bloom here in New Holland, the fire department wants to remind everyone that spring is the perfect time for a safety refresh. While we all look forward to warmer days, the change in season brings specific hazards that require our attention.
Here are three essential tips to help keep your family and property safe this spring:
1. The "10-Foot Rule" for Grilling
With barbecue season officially arriving, many of us are pulling the grills out of storage.
- Location Matters: Always place your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and outbuildings.
- Clean the Grease: Before your first cookout, thoroughly clean the grease tray and grates to prevent a flare-up that could quickly get out of control.
2. Manage Your Yard Waste
Spring cleanup often results in piles of brush and leaves. If you plan on burning yard waste, please remember:
- Check the Wind: Never burn on windy days. Embers can travel surprisingly far and ignite dry grass or neighboring structures.
- Stay Present: Never leave an outdoor fire unattended, even for a minute. Keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby until the ashes are completely cool to the touch.
3. Check Those Alarms
It’s a simple task that saves lives.
- Test: Press the test button on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors once a month.
- Replace: If your smoke detector is more than 10 years old, it needs to be replaced entirely, even if it still "beeps" when tested.
