It's Planting Season

Fire Safety in the Fields: Staying Safe During Planting Season

As the tractors roll out and the fields around New Holland come to life, the fire department wants to remind our farming community and residents that spring safety extends beyond the home. Planting season is one of the busiest times of the year in Logan County, and with that hustle comes a few unique fire risks.

Whether you're behind the wheel of a planter or just driving through the countryside, here are a few tips to ensure a safe and productive season:

1. Machinery Maintenance is Key

Dust, chaff, and oil are a dangerous combination. Fires can start quickly on heavy equipment when debris meets a hot engine or a faulty electrical connection.

  • Blow It Out: Regularly use compressed air or a leaf blower to remove dry debris from engine compartments and around bearings.
  • Check the Hoses: Inspect hydraulic lines for leaks. High-pressure fluid is highly flammable if it sprays onto a hot exhaust manifold.
  • Carry an Extinguisher: Ensure every tractor and truck has a fully charged 10 lb ABC fire extinguisher within reach. Check the gauges before you head out!

2. Watch the Road

With large equipment moving between fields, road safety is fire safety.

  • Give Them Room: If you see a tractor or an implement with "Slow Moving Vehicle" (SMV) signs, be patient. Avoid passing in areas where they might be preparing to turn into a field.
  • Bridge and Wire Awareness: For our operators, always be mindful of low-hanging power lines when moving equipment with high extensions.

3. Controlled Burns and Ditches

We know many of you are clearing fence rows or ditches this time of year.

  • Check the Wind: Never start a burn if winds are high or shifting. Embers can travel surprisingly far across dry fields.
  • Call It In: Before you light a large brush pile or ditch, give the dispatch center a non-emergency heads-up. It helps us avoid "controlled burn" calls turning into emergency responses.
