Harvest season is a time of excitement and hard work, but it's also a time when the risk of fire increases significantly. Dry fields, long hours, and heavy machinery create the perfect storm for potential hazards. That's why we at the New Holland Fire Department want to remind you of the importance of fire safety during this busy time.

Common Harvest Fire Hazards

Overheated Equipment: The intense strain on machinery during harvest can lead to overheating and fires. Regular maintenance checks, proper lubrication, and taking breaks to allow equipment to cool down are essential.

Dry Crops: Dry crops are highly flammable. Sparks from equipment or even a cigarette butt can quickly ignite a field fire.

Smoking: Smoking while operating machinery or in the fields is strictly prohibited. Dispose of cigarettes properly and always extinguish them completely.

Fuel Storage: Store fuel in approved containers away from heat sources and open flames. Never refuel equipment with the engine running.

Fire Prevention Tips

Regular Inspections: Before starting your harvest, inspect all equipment for potential fire hazards. Check for frayed wires, leaks, and overheating components.

Fire Extinguishers: Ensure you have fire extinguishers readily available on all equipment and know how to use them.

Emergency Plan: Develop a fire emergency plan for your farm, including evacuation routes and communication procedures.

Weather Awareness: Be aware of weather conditions. High winds and dry weather increase the risk of fire.

Create Firebreaks: Consider creating firebreaks around your fields to help contain fires if they occur.

By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire during harvest season. Remember, a small fire can quickly become a major disaster. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.
