Hello, friends and neighbors,

The sound of combines and tractors in the fields signals the beginning of harvest season. It's a busy and exciting time for our community, but it also means our rural roads will be shared with large, slow-moving farm equipment. Your New Holland Fire Department wants to make sure everyone stays safe on the roads.

Whether you're a driver commuting to work or a farmer moving equipment, awareness and patience are key.

For Drivers: Share the Road

  • Be Patient: Farm equipment travels at slower speeds. Please do not attempt to pass until you are absolutely sure it is safe to do so. A few extra minutes of patience can prevent a serious accident.

  • Give a Wide Berth: Farm equipment, such as combines and tractors with implements, are much wider than a standard car. Give them a wide berth, especially when you are passing on a straightaway or when the farmer is trying to make a turn.

  • Watch for Signals: Farmers use hand signals and turn indicators just like a car. Keep a close eye out for these signals. Be mindful that a large piece of equipment making a turn may need to swing wide.

For Farmers: Be Visible

  • Use Proper Lighting: Ensure all your lights, including turn signals and flashing amber lights, are clean and working correctly.

  • Safety Markings: Use Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs and reflective tape on all equipment to improve visibility for other drivers.

  • Plan Your Routes: Try to plan your trips during times of low traffic and avoid peak hours if possible.

By working together and practicing these simple safety measures, we can ensure a smooth and accident-free harvest for everyone in our community.

Stay safe out there,

New Holland Fire Department
