Bundle Up! Staying Safe in Freezing Temperatures

Freezing temperatures are here, and with it comes the biting cold. While the snow-covered landscapes can be beautiful, freezing temperatures pose serious risks. As your local volunteer fire department, we want to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe during these frigid months.

Here are some essential tips for staying safe in freezing temperatures:

1. Dress in Layers:

  • Base Layer: Wear moisture-wicking clothing next to your skin to keep you dry and warm.

  • Mid Layer: Add an insulating layer like fleece or wool to trap heat.

  • Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof jacket and pants are crucial to shield you from the elements.

2. Protect Your Extremities:

  • Head: Wear a warm hat that covers your ears.

  • Hands: Wear gloves or mittens, and keep them dry.

  • Feet: Wear warm, insulated boots with good traction to prevent slips and falls.

3. Stay Hydrated:

  • Dehydration can occur even in cold weather. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty.

4. Limit Outdoor Exposure:

  • Minimize time spent outdoors when temperatures are extremely low.

  • If you must go outside, check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

5. Watch for Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia:

  • Frostbite: Numbness, tingling, and discoloration of the skin.

  • Hypothermia: Shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness.

6. Check on Vulnerable Neighbors:

  • Help elderly neighbors or those with health conditions by checking on them regularly.

7. Prepare Your Home:

  • Insulate your home properly to prevent heat loss.

  • Seal any drafts around windows and doors.

  • Have a backup heating source, such as a fireplace or space heater.

8. Be Cautious with Space Heaters:

  • Never leave space heaters unattended.

  • Keep them away from flammable materials.

  • Use a fire extinguisher or baking soda to extinguish any small fires.

Remember: If you experience any symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.

We at the New Holland Fire Department are here to serve our community. Please stay safe and warm this winter.
